Couple Designing HomeAny homeowner will likely attest that there is a big difference between a house and a home. If you ask them what the difference is, they’ll probably tell you that a house is simply a structure that people live in and a home is a place that is your very own. Home is where you feel comfortable, relaxed, and loved. Home is where most of our fondest memories occur, and we wouldn’t trade the experiences we’ve had in them for the world. It’s been said before, but it’s definitely worth repeating: there really is no place like home!

There is a definite difference between a house and a home, but it can be tricky to pinpoint exactly what those differences are. For example, when you move into a new house, at what point does it become a home? When it does become a home, what did you do to make it that way? The answer to those questions ultimately comes down to personalization. To make a house a home, you simply need to make the house your own. Here are a few easy ways to personalize your house and make your house your home.

Change the Paint

One of the most effective ways to customize a house is to paint the walls colors that match your preferences. It does require some preparation, hard work and money, but painting the walls in your house will get it feeling like home in no time.

Light It Up

A huge part of decorating and personalization is lighting. Lighting plays a large role in the feel of any given room and your house as a whole. Changing the overhead lighting or even just adding a few lamps will make your house feel more personal, cozy and comfortable.

Decorate, Decorate, Decorate

You can’t decorate your house without personalizing it. Any decorations are an expression of self, and therefore decorating your house will do more to make it feel like home than almost anything else. When you’re decorating your house, consider adding some of the following personal touches:

  • Houseplants
  • Personal mementos
  • Artwork
  • Pictures

In addition to adding small details around the house, consider making some bigger changes as well: rearrange the furniture, add some rugs or change the carpet, or throw things away that you no longer want or need.

Give It Time

Moving is a big change, and it will take some time to get used to your new house. But once you’ve done all you can to make your house your very own space, it will feel like home in no time.
